Something I've been thinking for practically a decade now - sometimes a place's name becomes known for some tragedy or atrocity that happened there, and I try to remember that there are people who lived there and will continue to live there, people who have visited and will visit in the future. When we only think of a place in the context of a terrible thing that happened there, we risk defining those people only by what happened to them and how that fits into our own existing worldview, and not seeing them as fellow people with full lives and giving them that kind of respect.
