Usually, if a zhr stays in its host for more than a few days (for a reason other than espionage), its mind will merge with the hosts to form a single being, usually to the benefit of both. That's the case with Kendall. They've been openly non-binary ever since the host's knowledge of gender in progressive human society meshed with the zhr's frustration with its own planet's strict gender/agender binary.
